5 Signs of Spiritual Attack in Home and How to Pray

The clearest signs of spiritual attack in home life are sudden and out of character. They include constant strife, a heavy atmosphere, disturbed sleep, a household that drifts from prayer, and trouble that keeps repeating. One sign alone proves little. Several together, lasting weeks and hitting the things that hold a home together (peace, rest, unity, and worship), point to opposition worth praying against.
Most families feel this long before they can name it. You argue over nothing, the kids seem off, and you wonder whether to blame stress, the season, or the enemy. Guessing wrong in either direction costs you time. Some problems are medical or emotional, and others carry the fingerprints of Ephesians 6:12.
This article gives you five signs, a way to tell each one from ordinary trouble, and a prayer and protection step for each. At Global Vision Ministries we pray with families facing these patterns, and the steps below are the ones we point people to first.
1. Constant strife with no clear cause
What it looks like
The first sign of spiritual attack in a home is conflict out of proportion to its cause. Small issues turn into shouting matches, and offense multiplies. Jesus said a house divided against itself will not stand (Matthew 12:25), and division is the enemy's oldest tool against families. Ordinary stress has a cause you can name, and it fades when the cause does. Look for:
Arguments that start over nothing and escalate fast
Spouses who feel like opponents instead of partners
Children who turn moody or fight without a reason
Peace that returns briefly, then collapses again
Strife with no clear cause is the first place to look for an attack on a home.
How to pray and protect
Pray together before you try to solve the fight. Forgive out loud, then deal with the issue calmly. Paul warns us not to let the sun go down on our anger, "and do not give the devil a foothold" (Ephesians 4:26-27). Unresolved anger is an open door in a household. Try praying:
Father, in Jesus' name I refuse strife in this house. I forgive [name], and I close every door that anger has opened. Let Your peace rule here. Amen.
2. A heavy, fearful atmosphere
What it looks like
A second sign is a heaviness you can feel, a shift in atmosphere that settles over the rooms and the moods inside them. Scripture says God has not given us a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7), so dread with no source deserves attention. Watch for:
Sudden unease when you walk in the door
Family members who feel calmer away from home
Fear or tormenting thoughts with no trigger
Everyone short-tempered and tired at once
Persistent sadness, panic, or anxiety can also be medical. See a doctor or counselor alongside prayer, not instead of it. A home under spiritual pressure can need both.
Dread with no source deserves both prayer and a professional's opinion.
How to pray and protect
Walk through the house and pray aloud in every room. Thank God for His presence and speak Philippians 4:7 over your family, asking His peace to guard your hearts and minds. Play worship music, open the windows, and clear out clutter. Then declare:
In Jesus' name, I declare that this home belongs to God. Every spirit of fear and heaviness must leave. The peace of Christ rules here. Amen.
3. Disturbed sleep and night terrors
What it looks like
Restless nights are the third sign, especially when they spread across the household. David wrote, "In peace I will lie down and sleep" (Psalm 4:8), and Psalm 91:5 speaks of "the terror of night." Pay attention to:
Children waking afraid or describing the same nightmares
Dread at bedtime that was not there before
Waking at the same hour night after night
Adults who sleep but wake drained
Sleep also depends on health, caffeine, screens, and stress, so rule out the ordinary causes first. If a doctor finds nothing and the pattern continues, treat it as a spiritual matter too.
Rest is one of the first things the enemy tries to take from a household.
How to pray and protect
Turn bedtime into a ritual of prayer. Pray over each bed, bless each child by name, and read Psalm 4:8 or Psalm 91 aloud. Shut off violent shows and games well before sleep, because what children watch shapes what they dream. Then pray:
Lord, You give Your beloved sleep. Cover every bed in this house with the blood of Jesus. No terror comes near us tonight. Amen.
4. A household that drifts from God
What it looks like
The fourth sign is quiet and easy to miss. Prayer feels like a chore, the Bible stays closed, church gets skipped, and everyone is busy with everything except God. Peter tells us the devil "prowls around like a roaring lion" (1 Peter 5:8), and he does not always roar. Often he distracts. Signs include:
Family prayer that keeps getting postponed
Sudden irritation when spiritual things come up
Phones and screens crowding out every quiet moment
Entertainment in the house that dulls your conscience
Seasons of busyness happen to everyone. The difference with an attack is resistance that grows when you try to change course.
A home rarely loses its faith in one blow, it loses it one distraction at a time.
How to pray and protect
Rebuild a family altar. Ten minutes a day is enough:
Read one verse aloud together.
Name one thing to thank God for.
Pray for each person in the house.
Then take inventory. The early believers in Ephesus burned objects tied to the occult (Acts 19:19), and Deuteronomy 7:26 warns against bringing detestable things into your house. Remove what dishonors God, and pray:
Lord, as for me and my house, we will serve You (Joshua 24:15). Restore our hunger for Your Word and our desire to pray. Amen.
5. Trouble that repeats in cycles
What it looks like
The fifth sign is a pattern that keeps returning. It might be breakdowns, illness, money that drains away, temptation in an area you thought was settled, or the same family struggle across generations. Jesus said the thief comes "to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). Attacks often follow a step of obedience, such as a new calling, a recommitment to prayer, or a decision to serve.
Be honest, though. Not every setback is spiritual, and a demon is not behind every broken appliance. Ask whether wisdom has already fixed what it can: a budget, a doctor, a counselor, a repaired habit. When you have done the practical work and the cycle still comes back, pray about the root.
A cycle that survives wise effort is worth praying about at the root.
How to pray and protect
Write down the pattern and when it started. Repent of any sin you know is feeding it, then resist it by name. "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). If the pattern is deep or generational, ask a pastor or an experienced deliverance minister to pray with you. Start with:
Father, I submit this family to You. In the name of Jesus I renounce every pattern the enemy has used against us. We are free and we walk in Your protection. Amen.
Where to go from here
Spiritual attack on a home shows up in four places: peace, rest, unity, and worship. If strife, heaviness, bad sleep, or spiritual drift keep hitting your household, and the same trouble keeps cycling back, take it seriously. Rule out medical and practical causes, then pray in faith and remove whatever gives the enemy a foothold.
You do not have to fight alone, and you do not have to guess. If you want prayer, teaching, or one-on-one help for your family, reach out to Global Vision Ministries, and take the next step toward a home covered in peace by anointing your home with oil.
